Does the core business genuinely avoid or reduce emissions, or build climate resilience? Share of revenue that is actually 'green'. Fossil-dependent models score low.

Danfoss products directly enable large-scale avoided emissions: the company estimates variable speed drives sold in 2025 alone will enable ~19 million tonnes CO₂e of avoided emissions over their lifetime, and downstream use-of-sold-products accounts for ~122 million tonnes CO₂e annually — making product impact real but dependent on customer deployment and grid decarbonization.

Credible, science-based targets (SBTi), a real net-zero plan with progress to date, and CDP disclosure — not just a dated press release.

SBTi has validated Danfoss' updated 2025 targets: 90% absolute Scope 1 & 2 reduction by 2035 (ambition by 2030), 66.33% intensity-based Scope 3 reduction by 2035, and net-zero across the value chain by 2050 — credibility is strengthened by achieving the prior 46.2% Scope 1 & 2 target five years ahead of schedule, though the shift to intensity-based Scope 3 metrics is a meaningful caveat.

Operational footprint, labour and social practices, and governance quality across the company's own operations and supply chain.

EcoVadis Gold Medal placing Danfoss in the top 2% of its industry, Sustainalytics ESG risk rating of 23.1 (low-medium risk, ranked 99th out of 576 in-industry peers), and incremental diversity progress (22.1% women in leadership in 2023) reflect solid but not exceptional ESG operational performance; a 2024–2026 wave of US layoffs (143 workers) is minor in scale.

Quality of disclosure, independent third-party verification, and how much hard data backs the company's claims.

Danfoss has published environmental/sustainability reports since 1995 and reported to CDP since 2009; it aligns with GRI Standards and holds a CDP B score (Leadership tier in the updated A- rating per its own sustainability page), but Scope 3 data infrastructure is still maturing and third-party verification of ESG data is described as a work in progress.

Controversies, litigation, pollution, fossil-fuel lobbying, conflict-zone involvement and governance scandals. Higher means cleaner.

Two material historical controversies temper an otherwise clean record: (1) a DOJ guilty plea and $3M criminal fine for international price-fixing of refrigerant compressors; (2) a 2022 Danish Business Authority investigation into possible Russia sanctions violations (coil exports), closed with no further action — neither constitutes ongoing harm, but the price-fixing conviction is a real governance mark.
